Custom event trophies: The complete guide to designing awards

Event trophies are awards presented to recognize achievement at ceremonies, competitions, corporate events, and community gatherings. More than simple prizes, they are physical symbols of success that reflect the values, identity, and story of the organization presenting them.

3 event trophies of different designs all in a row

From bespoke corporate trophies to sports awards and community recognition pieces, event trophies take many forms. The materials, design, and level of personalization all influence how an award is perceived and how strongly it resonates with the recipient and the audience.

At most events, the trophy presentation is the moment everyone anticipates. It represents the pinnacle of achievement for the recipient and a defining moment for the event itself. A well-designed trophy acknowledges a significant accomplishment while creating a lasting connection between the winner and the organization behind the award.

Unlike digital recognition, a physical trophy has permanence. Displayed in homes, offices, studios, or clubhouses, it becomes a lasting reminder of the achievement it represents. Over time, it also reinforces the identity of the awarding organization, acting as a subtle but powerful extension of its brand and values.

For this reason, the impact of an event trophy extends far beyond the recipient. A thoughtful and well-crafted award can strengthen brand recognition, communicate organizational culture, and add meaning to the event itself.

In fact, many see event trophies as something fantastic for the holder of the award, which, while true, isn’t the whole story.

The awarding body also has much to gain from a beautiful and well-designed event trophy. Brand recognition, authority, awareness of fair culture – the list goes on.

But what is it that makes a great event trophy? How can its design capture the story of an event and create a memorable moment for both the winner and the audience?

In this guide, we explore everything you need to know about event trophies –  from materials and design considerations to sustainability, personalization, and choosing the right award for your event.

Why do trophies matter in events?

The relevance of trophies varies from event to event. Tradition, for example, may be among the top roles of event trophies when it comes to music, tv or sporting events. For corporate events, it’s often more to do with organizational values and culture.

In business, an event trophy is often awarded to an individual, but the feeling of satisfaction is felt company-wide. When employees see their efforts – or even their peers’ efforts – being acknowledged and rewarded in a meaningful way, they are 45% less likely to leave their role within 2 years.

In this instance, the event trophy matters because it’s not only a way of saying “thank you for your work”, but also a way for employers to communicate how they prioritize their staff to the outside world.

The trophy then becomes a symbol of company culture, and a well thought out design can assist in painting a brand story of care and consideration.

For an employee, artist, community leader or sportsperson, an award will always be a physical manifestation of pride and will long outlast any digital form of recognition.

It serves as an extension of the holder’s identity and anchors in memory the act or art that led to the award, providing a springboard for future achievements.

It’s only human for us to attach meanings to physical objects. The fact that we do makes a physical event trophy an impossible opportunity to miss out on.

Understanding the importance of having a physical trophy in this digital age is just as important as deciding what type of trophy is best suited to your event.

Types of event trophies (corporate, sports, arts & charity)

There are several types of event trophies, each designed to reflect the values and identity of the event they represent.

Corporate event trophies

The word ‘corporate’ has become synonymous with ‘boring’. When it comes to trophy design, your award should challenge that.

Your event trophy is about singling out the high achievers. So why are businesses still awarding disposable event trophies to indispensable employees? Why are standard awards being given to stand-out staff?

Investing time, budget and effort into the trophy is a direct investment into the members of staff. It shows true appreciation by matching their efforts in work with the effort put into the event trophy.

Our commitment to providing a quality, lasting memory entails every aspect of design. Providing customization that goes beyond just inscription and shape, we source materials that relate to the award.

For a B2B award, this may look like a trophy made from the production waste of your organization. Below is an image of a trophy we created for KLM, made from the plastic trays they use to serve food on flights.

Event trophies for the arts

While corporate awards focus on organizational values, creative industries approach event trophies differently.

Music events, TV awards, Art ceremonies, and Film festivals are all rooted in tradition, usually with multiple categories across a variety of genres. In highly competitive industries, a tangible award symbolizes the prestige of being named winner, with some awards including additional benefits – money, exclusive exhibitions, sponsorship.

With such huge items orbiting the trophy, it’s important that the object stands out. Awards are often used as marketing tools to promote certain labels, films, museums so having them instantly recognisable is a must. From the BAFTAs to the Oscars to the Grammys, all major arts events have instantly recognisable custom awards.

Making use of objects such as broken items discarded in production is how we make your awards super custom. Film trophies can be made of old video camera housing, painting awards made of paint palettes or plastic brushes, giving the award additional layers to its story.

Sporting event trophies

Similar to the arts, sports is a highly competitive industry, usually with world-renowned organizations.

Rooted in tradition, sporting event trophies have long remained the same. In the 16th century, trophies transformed from displays (such as statues, enemy armoury and architecture) into portable symbols of triumph named the Carlisle Bells. These were awarded for Horseracing, and sports eventually adopted a form more similar to Amphorae awarded in ancient Greece.

Fast forward to today, sports has made incredible advancements, but the trophies? These haven’t changed in 400 years.

Creating an event trophy for a sporting award presents an opportunity to move tradition forward and bring a breath of fresh air to an antiquated silhouette. We do this by using materials that are meaningful to the sporting organization and giving them a new life.

Charity and community event trophies

When it comes to recognising the value of individuals in voluntary roles, a physical symbol of appreciation is essential. Communities and charity organizations rely heavily on the goodwill of others.

Awarding a custom trophy is a way to say thank you, but also to motivate others to follow suit. When consideration is taken in design, it creates a unique moment of fulfilment for the entire community.

The award itself has to be an object that ties the community together. Recently, we created the ‘Havenkanjer Trophy’ specifically for the people working in the port of Rotterdam.

Our highly customized award added multiple layers of meaning, using reclaimed wood from a famous shipwreck in the port, and a port bollard to model the shape.

High-end event trophies

Any one of the above event types could be considered high-end. It depends on the brand, organization or association, but a high-end event could also be an event-type in itself – an exclusive society for example.

For high-end events, it’s especially important to communicate the value through the production of the event trophy.

From materials to details in the design, going fully bespoke is an absolute must for a luxury trophy, demonstrating self-awareness and leadership. Having a comprehensive step-by-step process and the assistance of our award design experts will make all the difference.

Design process

1. Inspiration

Design inspiration can come from just about anywhere, but it’s a good idea to focus on your event area. A few ideas:

  • Car racing events can draw from car components, circuits, classic event trophies and cups
  • Sporting trophies can circle around the sporting equipment (football, basketball)
  • Business awards usually include elements of the business ethos, logo or mission

2. Briefing

Our 10-step briefing form is designed to take the stress out of the process. We can arrange for one of our design experts to guide you and help with any questions you may have.

The more information you can give, the quicker the process will be – but there’s no rush from our side. After all the information is collected, we can help you fine-tune where needed.

3. Concept development

This step is largely helped by your initial brief, and can vary depending on what route you choose:

  • I already have a design: We help you to realize your design and translate your existing concept into a production-ready design. We advise on materials and conduct a manufacturability check, ensuring it can be produced efficiently and preventing production issues.
  • I have an idea: Our essential design package helps you come up with your one design concept plus some variations on that design.
  • I want options: We offer a premium service that builds on the essentials package by offering 3 concepts, and then developing your chosen concept into a production-ready design.
  • I want more options: Our prestige package provides 5 concepts and includes a 1:1 scale prototype, as well as custom material development. In an online session, we present the concepts, discuss preferences, and incorporate your feedback into the final design. We have the unique ability to create custom materials from a source that aligns with your event or brand.

When you’re forming the perfect design to tell a story and have an impact, it’s all about the details. Our team of event trophy experts will help you along the way.

From drawing sketches to creating prototypes, from exploring materials to custom sourcing, concept development helps to align design with intention, making sure your award fits with your event.

4. Production

Once you’ve approved your design, production can begin. We select carefully sustainable materials that fit the design brief, and deliver the award with a material passport, identifying the source of each material element. This aspect of our design is truly unique, telling the story behind the materials used and adding depth and character to the trophy.

Different materials used for event trophies

Most believe the materials you choose will have an impact on the perception of your award. The reality is, it’s how you use these materials.

A gold plastic trophy may be shiny from a distance but can look tacky if made cheaply. On the contrary, the plastics we work with are of high-quality and create a unique and luxury aesthetic.

Having worked with a range of different materials for many years, we are familiar with what works for certain designs. If you have material preferences, we can work with you to fit your design around these, making recommendations based on our experience.

Different sustainable materials used for event trophies

Metal: Some of our high-end event trophies are made with metal, but we aim to source a high percentage of recycled metal. We have made trophies from recycled electric cables, melting down the copper into bronze in our own kiln. We also use screws in our trophies, which allow for disassembly, reuse, and are also far more likely to end up being recycled.

Wood: Stadshout (city wood) is where we try to source most of our wood from. This is an initiative that rescues felled urban trees and processes them, making them available for use for companies like us. When used correctly, wood can symbolize luxury and is a very popular material used in awards.

Reclaimed materials: In the Havenkanjer event trophy (shown in more detail in this video), reclaiming materials is woven into our company ethos. Every trophy is crafted according to strict eco-friendly principles, utilizing materials such as recycled fishing nets, packaging materials, e-waste or upcycled industrial byproducts, ensuring that each component of the trophy contributes to environmental preservation.

So this process gets the credit it deserves, our ‘material passport’ transparently and proudly displays the source of the materials we use.

Recycled acrylic: Transparent, yet 100% recycled. Our acrylic is sourced from old signage, window panels and other discarded materials, giving waste a second life as a striking award.

Biobased materials: Our 3D printing process utilises PLA plastic – a material derived from renewable sources like corn starch or sugarcane. This plastic is biodegradable in commercial composting environments.

A combination of any of the above can be used. By working with trophy manufacturing experts, you can find the right combination of materials to create an event trophy that is truly unique to your brand.

Sustainable and eco-friendly event trophies

Sustainability in trophy design often gets a bad rap. It’s not simply gluing a trinket to a block of wood and calling it eco-friendly (at least for us it’s not).

While sustainability is at the forefront of our design choices, we believe innovative design and elegance should still lead the way.

For event trophies, eco-friendly design means:

Circular design: Slightly different from recycled design, circular is when the same product stays in the same production cycle. This means designing to keep materials in use for the longest possible time. To do this, we take into account every last detail – from what we create the main section of the event trophy from to how we fix all the pieces together.

Repurposing: Whether it’s our own event trophies or awards from other manufacturers, we offer a take-back scheme designed to repurpose trophies, plaques and medals into a new stage of glory.

Carbon considerations: Every step of the process needs to be taken into account. The distance we source recycled materials from, the packaging we ship them in. The most obvious answer isn’t always the right one when it comes to calculating low carbon emissions!

Responsible sourcing: Just as trophy manufacturers have a responsibility to create responsibly, so do our suppliers. It’s our duty to make sure we are working with reputable companies, who are transparent in their operations.

Recycled materials: Creating beautiful materials responsibly – and often with a key relation to the trophy’s intention. For instance, using recycled plastics from car interiors in a racing trophy.

Deciding which materials to work with means considering how appropriate it is. Each event trophy has different requirements, so each material chosen will be unique.

Trends in trophy design

Following trends in trophy design is important when it comes to the appeal of the event trophy. For example, the Olympic medals are reimagined for each occurrence, helping the games stay relevant and maintain authority in the sporting world.

This modern approach also helps with marketing – enabling athletes of all ages to proudly share their medals on social media and in press conferences, while also cementing the Olympics as a trendy event worthy of the next generation of spectators and participants.

Current trends in event trophy and medal design include:

  • Minimalism: As seen in the most recent winter Olympics medals.
  • Sustainability: A non-negotiable when it comes to attracting younger generations, and a trend that is here to stay.
  • Brand storytelling: Helping to stay relevant and keep an emotional investment in your organization.
  • Material transparency: Key to building a trustworthy brand reputation (especially when it comes to the sustainability ‘trend’).

How to choose the right trophy for your brand

Audience

As we mentioned earlier, the event trophy is, in part, a marketing tool. When designing your trophy, you need to consider your intention. Yes, you want to recognize the recipient. But you also want to convey a message. Consider what that message is, and who it’s for. Who are you trying to attract? Whose attention do you want?

With our creation process, we help you think about all of these questions and make adjustments until the design is right for you.

Budget

Cost and quality need to be balanced. You’re not going to achieve a trophy that’s representative of the winner’s investment if you don’t invest in the award.

An event trophy should be considered a work of art, something that will withstand the test of time and a high-quality object that promotes discussion of the awarding body.

Values

Your organization’s values and identity should be reflected in the trophy design. When awarded, your audience needs to be a) surprised by the modern sophistication of the design and b) be able to recognize it as an extension of your brand. It’s a fine balance to strike, but one that we aim to make much easier when helping you design your event trophy.

Longevity

A trophy should always be made to last. This is harder to achieve without quality input. It seems even huge events, such as the Olympics, have fallen victim to oversight when it comes to quality control.

The more accessible manufacturing has become, the more inaccessible longevity is. We aim to put a stop to that. Our event trophies are created to be handled, kept and displayed for as long as they’re wanted (forever, surely!).

Engraving and logo

The perfect way to personalise and dedicate your award, engraving and logos are always available as an option.

It emphasises the legacy of both your brand and the recipient and cements the award’s ‘official’ status.

The value of the award increases, as a customised and engraved award is more likely to be perceived as more thoughtful.

Choosing the right packaging

Often left until last, the packaging is as important as the trophy itself. Choosing the right packaging means considering:

  • Is your award being shipped or collected?
  • Will your trophy travel further after it’s been received?
  • Does the packaging need to withstand going through customs check points?

At Upstream Trophies, we take great care in packaging your awards, utilizing eco-friendly materials such as recyclable boxes which are also made from recycled paper, paper based tape, recycled bubble wrap, and biodegradable fillers. This approach means your awards are delivered in impeccable condition, while minimising your carbon footprint.

Tell your story through trophy design with Upstream Trophies

Our main priority is to create something that can be a part of your brand fabric for years to come.

Your event trophy should be symbolic of everything your organization represents, as well as the acknowledgement you hold for others.

By working with our designers, you can broadcast your story through the award, using symbolic shapes, custom materials and visual architecture.

We help you identify your story. Core emotions. Key messages. Anything you feel the trophy should represent. Using your guidance, we come up with visuals (sketches, prototypes) so you can adjust the concept, always bringing it back to the final user and asking: Is this something they would be proud to display?

By focusing on these key stages, your event trophy will tell your brand story in the coolest way possible.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. A complete overview of what to consider when creating an event trophy.

From materials and sustainability to budget, brand identity and long-term impact, every decision shapes not just the award but how the moment is remembered. Event awards should be made to last. The materials, the trends, the craftsmanship – these are all factors that determine whether your trophy ends up in the hall of fame or the attic.

They are hugely important pieces, both to you and to the recipient. These trophies could be on display for years – even decades – so your design choices matter. Your awards should represent your organization, your values, and how you want to be perceived long after the event itself has ended.

At the same time, they should represent the winner – what they’ve achieved, what it took to get there, and why they are a valued part of your community. Personalised recognition is a key ingredient in recipient satisfaction and encourages them to speak positively about their award and the experience surrounding it.

Because in the end, a well-designed event trophy reflects success just as well as it honours it.
