You want to buy a trophy, but everything tells you that you cannot turn up again with the same standard prize as last year, and really the year before that too. The world is changing, and the market of traditional cups is simply out of step with the times. It is time for a trophy revolution, and for sustainable awards that actually mean something.
At Upstream Trophies we believe it is time for a revolution in the world of the trophy. For too long the market has been dominated by soulless, mass-produced cups that do no justice at all to the achievement they symbolise. We drive a revolution by merging refined design with real sustainability. With the expertise of our parent company, product design studio Better Future Factory, we combine years of knowledge of innovative materials with the latest production technologies. We do not make standard sports prizes; we make sustainable awards and trophies with a story.

The trophy revolution: why recycled plastic is our real hero
In today’s market, acrylic (often known as acryl), wood and metal are the most-used base materials for custom trophies. They are loved for their versatility and the option to personalise. However, the way these materials are traditionally used is often boring and far from sustainable.
We take a different approach. While we do use these popular materials, for us they are not the hero of the design. We use them as a supporting starting point, while the real lead role goes to unique materials with an absolute wow-factor.
For this we often use recycled plastic, because it gives us full control over the aesthetics. By playing with patterns and the origin of the material, we can steer the look and feel exactly. This lets us create genuinely custom statement pieces that not only keep the classic qualities of an award, but reinterpret them for a new, conscious generation. The result is a statement piece that shows the power of transformation: from waste to glory.

Made from 100% recycled plastic and it looks like glass?
A classic glass trophy is fragile and often cannot be recycled. The industry has therefore switched en masse to acrylic, but often the wrong kind. We use 100% recycled acrylic that we work with the precision of a jeweller. Thanks to our background at Better Future Factory, we know exactly how to give this material a refined look.
This way we create custom sustainable awards with the optical clarity of glass, but with the resilience of sustainable plastic. It is a statement piece that shows a sustainable choice can also be the most aesthetic one.
What is the power of local wood and recycled metal in modern trophies?
Wood and metal remain favourites for trophies because of their weight, but also the refined finish that can be achieved with them. We never take the easy route, though. We work with locally sourced wood and metal that consists of at least 50% recycled content. This makes the trophy not only feel heavy and solid, but also gives it a minimal CO₂ footprint.
By combining wood and metal with, for example, a 3D print with bold shapes, we create a modern contrast. This approach to custom trophies brings the craftsmanship of classic materials together with state-of-the-art techniques and processes.

Can recycled plastics really look like natural stone?
We challenge the perception of plastic. Through advanced processing techniques we can transform recycled plastic into materials with a natural-stone look that is hard to tell apart from real natural stone, such as marble or granite (which often comes from far away). This is how we create high-quality materials, locally and sustainably.
These materials have their own unique ‘grain’, which makes every trophy literally unique. The nice thing about this material is that it can often be printed in full colour directly.
How does recycled plastic serve as the perfect canvas for storytelling?
For us, recycled plastic is much more than a raw material; it is a canvas for storytelling. We play with the origin of materials. For example, we make sustaible awards from discarded bottle caps or fishing nets, which creates a unique ‘pop’ of colours and patterns.

To make this story tangible, every trophy from us comes with its own material passport. This passport tells the honest story of its origin: where the materials come from and how they were transformed. This material gives us the freedom to experiment with unique shapes that are impossible with traditional materials. Whether it is an organic pattern or a clean geometric design, the recycled plastic tells a complete and transparent story of transformation: from waste to glory. Why is the base of the trophy decisive for the sense of quality?
The base of the trophy is the foundation of the whole experience. Because we use advanced techniques such as 3D printing, which are naturally optimised for lightweight designs, and plastics that are lighter than natural stone, a unique challenge arises. In the world of exclusive awards, a heavier weight is still directly associated with quality.
To ensure that necessary substance and a refined feel, we often combine our modern prints with a heavier, high-quality base. For this we use materials such as recycled metal or solid local wood. This gives the prize the weight it needs, which gives the recipient an unmistakable sense of quality and refinement at the moment of recognition.
How does the choice of sustainable materials affect the look of sports prizes?
The traditional market for sports prizes leans on temporary shine, but we choose lasting value. Our sustainable awards have an honest, refined look that fits the modern era far better. By choosing sustainable materials with a history, we give the victory a deeper meaning and a keepsake that stays with people for a long time. One of the sports prizes we designed is the Veolia pickleball award, which showed the value of the event through the choice of sustainable awards.

What does Better Future Factory add to realising unique designs?
The trophy revolution we drive is powered by the knowledge of our product design studio Better Future Factory. Thanks to this expertise, we can experiment with new production technologies and turn complex waste streams into high-quality design objects. We have the technical skill in house to realise unique designs that others consider impossible.
Why is the material passport essential for the credibility of your sustainable awards
We believe in full transparency. That is why every trophy comes with a material passport. This image, often on the bottom of the sustainable awards, tells where the materials come from. It is the ultimate form of storytelling that proves your custom award really has a positive impact on the world.

Key points to remember
- Join the trophy revolution: stop handing out soulless mass production and choose refined design that challenges the market standard.
- Recycled plastic as ‘hero’: we use popular materials only as a base; the real wow-factor and aesthetic control come from our innovative, recycled plastics.
- Storytelling through the material passport: every award tells an honest and transparent story about its origin, from discarded fishing nets or client-specific waste to a tangible statement piece.
- Driven by design and technology: our collection comes from the deep knowledge of product design studio Better Future Factory, where we play with unique shapes and patterns.
- Quality through substance: we combine lightweight 3D-printing techniques with a heavy, high-quality base of local wood or metal, because a prize that deserves to be seen should also be felt.
- From waste to glory: we transform waste streams into unique, custom-made statements that reinterpret the classic qualities of an award for a conscious generation.

FAQ
What is a material passport and why is it important for my award?
The material passport is the ultimate form of transparency. It tells the honest story of where your trophy comes from: where the materials come from, such as old fishing nets or bottle caps, and how they were transformed. This proves the real impact of the award and makes the story behind the prize tangible for the recipient.
How do you make sure a trophy made from recycled plastic still has a refined look?
We challenge the perception of plastic through advanced processing techniques. We can transform recycled plastic into materials with a natural-stone look, such as marble or granite, that are hard to tell apart from the real thing. Because every piece of plastic has its own unique ‘grain’, every award is a unique statement piece.
Why is the base of the trophy decisive for the sense of quality?
To ensure the necessary substance and a refined feel, we often combine our modern prints with a heavier, high-quality base. For this we use materials such as recycled metal or solid local wood.
