They get photographed under stage lights, held up in front of an audience, sometimes displayed in a studio lobby for decades after the ceremony ends. A corporate award can sit in a drawer and still do its job. Entertainment award trophies have to perform (usually on camera) in the moment it’s handed over, so the design has to live up to the hype of the event – from the material to the build.

Why entertainment award trophies demand a different kind of trophy

Most entertainment award trophies are built around recognisability. A single silhouette, repeated year after year, becomes shorthand for the ceremony itself. Miss the opportunity to become iconic and the object falls short of the industry expectation. Take the Oscars or Grammys – an identifiable shape with no explanation necessary. Even the Brit Awards, with its changing design every year, maintains the same outline because it’s emblematic of the event it represents.

The Brit Awards have a new design each year, but keep the same silhouette

A corporate trophy gets made once and judged once. An entertainment trophy gets judged every year it’s used. It has to work on camera, in a photograph, from the back row of a room built for a thousand people, and it has to keep working that way without losing attention.

Film and TV awards

Film and television have the most established trophy conventions of any entertainment category. MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed the Oscar statuette in 1928. Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley built it in three dimensions. The design has barely moved since. The only change to the base size came in 1945, and it’s stayed that way for eight decades. Half a second of it on a red carpet is enough. Nobody needs the rest of the shot to know what they’re looking at.

That consistency comes at a cost for anyone designing new film and TV awards. There’s a strong pull toward familiar shapes: the standing figure, the reflective surface, the plinth. While distinction through traditional shapes is the usual route, it does leave the door open for new shape and design to break the mold, even if that comes in the form of a new concept such as circular design.

Music awards

Music award trophies have more room to move, partly because the sector isn’t singular the way film is. A Grammy signals something different from an award handed out at a regional festival, and the design language follows. Sound and rhythm show up as visual motifs more often here than anywhere else in entertainment, alongside forms that nod to instruments, vinyl, or stage production.

An electronic award and a folk award shouldn’t look interchangeable just because both are, technically, music awards. Borrowing something specific from the genre being celebrated will end up being more meaningful than reaching for a generic music symbol.

Comedy awards

Comedy is the least codified category here. There’s no comedy equivalent of the Oscar. No single silhouette says “comedy award” on sight, the way a gramophone says music. Part of that comes down to how fragmented the industry is compared to film or music. Stand-up, sketch, sitcom, festival circuits: most of them don’t share a ceremony, let alone a trophy.

A comedy award has more freedom to reflect tone without fighting decades of expected form. Few designers seem to be using that freedom yet.

Drag awards

Drag already has its own visual language, built on crowns, sashes, and staged presentation as part of the performance itself. A drag trophy is competing with an outfit designed for exactly the same job: catching stage light and holding it.

Upstream Trophies designed the award for So You Think You Can Drag Benelux 2026 with that in mind. The gold on the trophy isn’t plating and it isn’t paint. It’s a gold flake material, made from shredded perfume caps and cast to hold its own metallic finish. Beside it sit mirrored panels in recycled acrylic. They catch the stage light and send it straight back into the room. The trophy carries a material passport recording where the gold and the mirror actually came from, same as every UST piece.

So You Think You Can Drag 2026 trophy, designed and created by Upstream Trophies

A drag stage demands shine and sparkle – and most stages incorporate this into their design. With trophies, that shine is usually added as a finish, plated or painted on at the end. We built it into the material instead, knowing it was a key ingredient when it comes to designing a drag award.

Design and culture awards

Design and culture awards sit slightly outside pure entertainment, but the territory is similar. These are objects meant to represent creative achievement. They often get displayed somewhere with its own aesthetic standards to live up to.

Upstream Trophies designed the Frame Awards 2019 trophy for Frame, the Netherlands-based design and architecture publication. The material was recycled PET bottles. While the design is entirely different from the drag trophy, the starting point is always the same: know who’s actually going to be looking at it, and design for that.

Frame Award 2020, designed and created by Upstream Trophies

What entertainment award trophies get right, and where there’s room to improve

This sector understands scale and confidence. A design built to repeat, ceremony after ceremony, without losing its nerve, is harder to pull off than it looks, and the best entertainment award trophies make it look easy.

Material honesty is where the gap tends to sit. A lot of entertainment awards design still treats material as a finishing step: gold plating over a cheaper base, paint standing in for the real thing.

For example, did you expect the BAFTA to be made from the same phosphor bronze alloy as propellers and guitar strings, or did you assume it was part gold?

The BAFTA trophy takes the shape of a theatrical mask

A material with its own story (no matter what type of material) will perform leaps and bounds above the rest. Documented instead of disguised, it can carry the achievement further than any generic gold finish does.

There’s more to work with than current convention suggests, particularly for anyone with an unusual waste stream sitting behind the scenes of a production, a venue, or an event.

Interested in learning more? Get in touch with us today.

FAQ

What makes good entertainment award trophies?

Recognisability and sculptural presence matter more in entertainment than in most trophy categories, since these objects are seen on stage, on camera, and often repeated year after year as part of a ceremony’s identity.

Do entertainment awards need to follow existing design conventions, like a statuette or a gramophone shape?

No. Established silhouettes work because of decades of consistency, but categories without that history, like comedy or drag, have more freedom to design around tone and material instead.

What materials work well for stage and entertainment trophies?

Reflective and light-catching materials tend to perform best under stage lighting.
